In my CD player as I type is the first night of Springsteen's legendary two-night stand at San Francisco's Winterland on 15 December 1978.

Some of you will know this is the culmination of a decade's long search for this bootleg. I did see an incomplete version of it in Greenwich Village in the 90s, but decided - foolishly, it turns out, as I could never find it again - not to buy it then.

Endless internet searches eventually, just a week or so ago, turned up an Italian bootleg available via Quebec, for which I was asked to send a £20 note in the mail. This I did, being quite prepared to lose the investment in what was after all something of a holy quest.

The 3 CD set avoided UK customs (sshhhh) to come through my postbox into our entrance hall just over half an hour ago.

I was thus able to hear again Bill Graham's introduction, last heard with all seven or eight of us who had only managed to get tickets to the second night huddled around a radio in a Stanford dorm room. (This is a lie: Green did access a multiple generation tape version in the mid-80s, but it was, in fairness to him, all but inaudible – Ed.)

The next night we were treated to, quite simply, the greatest concert of my life: Springsteen, fresh out of an enforced contract-bound layoff, on his first performances supporting his greatest album, Darkness on the Edge of Town.

I was not only accompanied by smelly Californian dorm rats - to a person Stanford law students, I may add, now earning their millions somewhere - but a young Ohioan lass I had met some years before on AFS in South Africa. Her name was, implausible as this must sound, Candy. She had travelled from Ohio by train to California for a reunion, arriving the night before the concert to announce - when I waved two Springsteen tickets before her expecting immediate physical gratification on the station - that she had grown out of rock and roll (we were around 25 then).

This was only the slightest dampener (other expectations having come to fruition by then), as I drove her off regardless the next night to the Winterland.

Four and half hours after Bill’s introduction of Bruce & Co. on night two, we joined the happiest and most exhausted concert crowd I have ever seen stumbling out of the Winterland hanging on to each other and anyone else who would help us stay upright. All four and a half of those hours – which included an hour and a half encores – had been packed with solid peak of career E Street, heavily weighted towards Darkness. Bruce, I may say looked fresh as when he started whilst we could barely stand, and rumour had it he would turn up at some club and jam with a local band until dawn. We did check out a few of the clubs to see if this was true, and didn’t get the evidence: but the night was mine by then anyway, because, by about song five of the concert (Candy’s Room only came in the second half), the particular Candy (figuratively) on my arm, was declaring her reconversion to rock and roll, and fairly incidentally, me. Perhaps not going as far as a later Stanford girlfriend – Ohio proving too far away – I hadn’t known at the time who would openly tell anyone who would listen when we went out that this Springsteen concert had literally saved her life. She worked in Stanford’s famous medical faculty, so I assume she knew what she was talking about – although perhaps all of us remember a time when rock had something of that genuine emotion.

I shall not attempt anything like a review of the bootleg (there are reviews aplenty on Springsteen bootleg sites, all saying it is one of the best, amidst their assertions that they would never stoop to selling such a thing, until you follow one tortuous link to Quebec).

What I will say is that I still remember my fury when the first legal live Bruce – Live 1975-1985 – left out precisely what is so powerful about straight-through Bruce concerts: extended versions of many of the songs interspersed with narratives and knife-edge band improvisation, and, especially, his ability to control the emotional intensity of the experience: starting at a peak most bands climax at, and then pulling back, going up again, dodging sideways, whatever, but keeping the audience in the palm of his hand for every second of the gig before throwing you up into the air of the night, leaving you to come down wherever you happened to land with a sense that you had been somewhere very, very special.

Something, by the way, he largely failed to do when I saw him at Earl’s Court in 1999, wonderful but weighed down by his own history, heavy and stolid by comparison with the kid who in 1978 leapt off a 3 or 4 metre speaker stack whilst playing a lead break and then skidded across the floor, never missing a note, to intersect head on with Miami Steve, running full force from the other side of the stage playing his perfectly matching lead break. And then – this is the point about a Springsteen gig – look over his shoulder at the crowd and give a cheesy grin that said it all: yes, this is rock and roll cheese, but shit it’s fun beyond anything else. And then throw himself onto the waving hands of the crowd, microphone in hand and never missing a word, with terrified roadies trying to pull him back by the microphone cord. And then back on stage to bring it down so dark and low – on this occasion, with Point Blank or Drive All Night, as yet unreleased on record – that you’d be moved to tears. And then take you all the way back up again, singing along with every chorus and yelling that Bruuuuuuuuce that sounds so much like, except it could never be, a Booooooo, until you had absolutely no voice left.

Well, here’s to Candy (I wonder if she’s on Facebook? – then again, I loathe Facebook), Bruce, and Antoine L. in Montreal: not necessarily in that order, but thanks for one of those nights that don’t come along too often.
